Hi all!
I am wondering if anyone has any information about General Anesthetic in an older cat. I have a 16 year old cat that is scheduled to go in and have some big knots removed tomorrow!! I am scared that something will happen to her because of her age!! Has anyone else been through this? I hate to leave her like that as it must be painful, but I also would feel REALLY horrible if something happened to her! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! |

Hello mudrafas,
It must be something serious for your cat, that the vet has decided on giving your cat a general anesthetic, despite your cat's old age. Don't worry too much. General anesthetic is dangerous not only on older pets, but also on young pets. The vet will try their best to do the job as fast and good as possible. Now, all you can do is to hope that the best comes out of everything, take good care of your cat and things will return back to normal in no time. Keep us posted about your cat's condition. ------------------ Many thanks to Nightmare for seeking permission from garfield.com to use this picture. |

Hi Garfield!
Thanks for the reply! Actually she was supposed to go in this morning at 8am but I chickened out!! She has a lot of mattes (knots in her fur) and they wanted to put her to sleep to remove them. They are really close to the skin so they don’t want her to move or they might cut her. First of all, I just can’t justify $300 Canadian for a haircut!!! And even if I could, she is 16 years old and I just don’t think her heart could handle that!! She is still so full of life though!! She does sleep a lot, but during the day she will frequently go outside and run around like crazy and chase birds up trees!! She has lived so long that I would hate to see her life end over a knot!!! We will work with her and try to remove one piece at a time. She usually will sit still for me and let me cut out a bit! It will just take time! They don’t seem to bother her so why do this to her?? She had it done in 1997 where they put her to sleep and she was SOOOOO sick afterwards they didn’t think she would make it! She is now 4 years older than that!! I’m just afraid something will happen and I will never forgive myself!! It will take a bit more time for me to do it, but it is much safer and easier on her!! I’ll keep you posted on the knots and how we are doing!!! Thanks for your help! |

Hello mudrafas,
I see. It is some fur knots that has to be removed. Then it isn't neccessary at all. I thought your cat is to be operated on! I think if the fur knots aren't bothering her, i think it is fine. Just take your time to slowly remove one by one when you more time. That would be not only save you a hole in the pocket, and i am sure it would also enhance your bond with your lovely cat. ![]() ------------------ Many thanks to Nightmare for seeking permission from garfield.com to use this picture. |
