Hi

glad to here you are keepingthe buny, it is so sad that a place like that can even do such a thing, poor rabbits, that sort of place should be shut down, half the rabbits will not survive.
As for greens, mind eat loads in summer, their diet is 80% greens and 20% dry, of course they get hay and fresh water on top of this. and hard dog biscuits as treats (not meaty ones)
as to a name, i used to have a mismarked one, she has the butterfly, and most of the line of spots down her back and some on the side, but she wasn't quite correct, so as she was a little madame, cheeky and nosey, i called her Charlie, i think find out that this breed, breeds out mismarked ones anyway and they are called charlies!!

Thank you for the link to the breed pages...alas, the Mystery Rabbit looks somewhat similar, but I don't think he is any of those three -- but probably something related. He has a similarity that I can see between these breeds, but his spotting is much more profuse than any of these, and has large blotches of colour as well as dozens of ragged smaller spots off the edges of them.

I've seen ones like him offered for sale in pet shops quite a lot, and at the Humane Society, but these three are not really the same as he is. If you have 'The Houserabbit Handbook' by Marinell Harriman, he looks closest to the rabbit on page 8 named Darla. Except Mr. Whiskers (aka Zorro, BunBoy, & Lapin III...he is becoming a Rabbit of Many Names) has even more colouring and patches.

I have the sneaking suspicion that he is probably some meat breed that they bred with a neat looking coat so that it would appeal to kids as a pet as well as to meat breeders, get more sales. Well, whatever he is, his name ISN'T Hasenpfeffer!!!

Other breeds will also show the spotted pattern. (each on of those links will contain links to other Breed pages -- look at Rex, Mini Rex, Polish, Satin)

Breeds that have specific markings will throw what are known as "mismarks". In some breeds the pattern of spots called for is very specific, in others almost any spotted pattern pass as long as there is color on the nose, around the eyes, and on the ears, as well some spotting on the body. Most breeds do have a limitation saying that the spotting must be at least 10%, but not more than 50%.

Your fellow could be a mismark, with markings so far from the standard that he was not eligible to show.
Some breeders do dispose of their mismarks to the pet market -- mismarks are usually quite adorable in their appearance.

Enjoy him!
