Abuse

Hi i have several sugar gliders and have just adopted one from a friend that has self adminited abused this poor creature.. I cannot get him to bond, he does eat though and is very healthy, I've tried the Bonding pouch for a month now and that hasn't worked. He still bites my hand when i try to pick him up. Is there any hope for this guy? I'm willing to put the work into rehabilitating him if it is as all possible

I'm thoroughly impressed and I believe that you can do it. If he needs a friend, I am willing to sell my adult at a reasonable price, and can ship if necessary (and if someone could inform me on how to do it). My boy needs a lot of attention as he was never bonded, but sold from a pet store before I had any knowledge of gliders. (got him like a stupid college student and now realize my mistake). I don't have the time for him at all. Maybe bonding two together might work. Maybe I'm just reaching. I just want someone to take care of my boy.

a glider will bond if you give them enough time.. you just have to let them bite you to see that you dont care.. that wont make you back down. try making a hiss noise when he bites at you.... just try to bond with him.. its not worth sending this poor guy in & out of new places.. thats not going to help a THING! YES, i strongly encourage you to get another.. gliders do MUCH better in pairs..
i hope the BOTH of you keep them & get another.. its not their fault..*cough cough* not to be rude, but its yours.. why do they have to pay? take them EVERYWHERE With you in the pouch, & then it will get better. & no it will NOT happen over night.. keep at it, give lots of licky treats, & other hand fed treats... or mealies.,.EVERY NIGHT! both of you should get another glider, but find one that is not as agressive as the one you have, if possible, that will show the other that the new glider isnt afraid of you..think of it this way, if you were that big, would you want someone your size reaching in to grab you? let them come to you! trust me, you are pretty scarey right now to them,..give it time! i have had the one of mine almost 4 months & he is still a little crabby at me.. but i deal with it, & know it will only get better with time.. after he or she sees you so much, you wont be so bad after all..
i highly recommend you to visit a glider based forum for your questions with them whether it be, bonding, feeding, play time, you name it, its on there... just google.com search sugar glider forums.. you will get a lot of helpful stuff..
hope i have changed your minds!!!=]
good luck!!! *& make sure if you still sell you get a NICE home that knows about the animals you are selling! you also need to tell the people how the gliders your selling REALLY are*

hehe, thanks! =] i just hate to see poor little ones rejected because someone doesnt want to take the time to spend with them.. & reasearch would have told you that they need A LOT of time..
Kleigh426, i think you should stop looking SO HARD to find a new home, & try a bit HARDER to bond,,, time spend on here placing ads is that much time you could have been working with your glider that truley needs & loves you!

Thumbs up this isn't so bad!

Hey Yigos,

Well, I found a fanny pack, and Murphy is in there right now. I braved up a bit and used my bare hands instead of a cloth glove to handle him today. he only nipped me twice and I hissed at him and he quit. He has escaped the "pouch" once but he went back in easily. Every now and then he sticks his nose out and looks at me, then goes back to sleep. I'm actually really enjoying this. The more I think about it, the more I realize that this isn't THAT hard. I just have to be patient. he is SO adorable, and I really am not ready to give him up. And as long as he is snuggled safe in his pouch I can do everything else, including play fetch with the dogs. The urine smell IS weird, but not a nasty smell like rat pee. He hasn't fussed at me at all today, and actually let me get him out of his cage rather easily. And he was so cute when I woke him up, peeking out like he was playing a game. and he has let me pet his head a lot too. I'm going to give him some fresh veggies tonight. what exactly do you mean by licky treats? keep encouraging me...i need it, b/c I get discouraged easily. I can't get him a buddy right now b/c I don't have the money, however, I am going to work really hard to bond with him. Like I said, the fanny pack with him so close to me and feeling him wiggle around every now and then is great. Rats aren't as willing to snuggle into a pouch or pocket like this, I never realized how cuddly this little guy really was. Thanks so much Yigos!!! Maybe me and Murphy can work this out afterall!!!

Kristen
