Smile I Want A Sugar Glider

Hi, I have been doing alot a reading on sugar gliders and would like to get a few. I have the dedication for them but I'm unsure because I have small children. Can anyone give me some advice on how they are with kids? Thanx.

It's not so much how they are with kids, it's how kids are with them, like most animals. They are small animals, so the kids have to understand how to be gentle. If the kids are under 7 or 8 I would suggest not letting them pet or carry them, or do it under strict supervision. Older kids can usually be half trusted, but not without supervision until they're 10 or so I would think, as a sudden move could cause a younger kid to squeeze or something. I got my first gerbil when I was 8, but I did get bitten because I squeezed him too hard. However, I didn't do it again ^_^

Im living near the Bronx.......and thanx for the info Kayl. I am going to look into getting a few gliders. My kids have been very gentle with the hammies we already have, but i dont plan on leaving them unattended with the gliders though.

males do have more scent glands then females. Gliders will pee and poop on you when you first handle them, they will scratch and bite the hell our of your hand. They make a very loud crabbing noises and lunge at you if they are scared. I have 2 females that I've had for about 3 months now, one still scratches and bites me when I put her back in her cage after playtime. I had one that I had for 11 years and she passed away of old age, she was very much bonded to me, but then again I had her for 11 years. Gliders do not like to feel like you are controlling them, they like to be in control. So if you try to hold them and keep them in your hand they will not like it! I remember Chamira, she would sit in my hand and eat her mealies and little treats, but if I closed my hand she would do everything she could to try and squeeze out of my hand! Some gliders take longer then others, it's all based on their personality and how much the breeders handled them. I do not think mine were handled very much, even though I was assured that they were hand tamed. Mine are still a little skiddish and kinda jump when I put my hand next to them, but at least they stopped crabbing at me! I don't breed gliders, but I do know they only have like one or two joey's and they should be 8 weeks OOP before they are taken from their mommy. I'm sure others know more about the breeding aspect.
