bite wounds on pig... anything to worry about?
recently two of my pigs got into a fight, one of them ended up with what looks like bite wounds all over his butt area...
i only noticed this when i carried him after i got home, so the wound seems to have dried up already. is there anything to worry? |

Yes, it may go sceptic. You'd better take him to a vet to be on the safe side. I had a pig who died from an infected bite wound once.

what is it with you people?? vet vet vet, they know squat about guineas!!
he'll probably give him an anti-biotic and probably one thats toxic to pigs if it's already dried up and looks like it's healing he should be fine just leave it alone, if the spot around it is all swollen then you could pick off the scab, squeeze the gunk out, (yes it's gross) and then flush it with PEROXIDE 3% which you can get from your chemist for about $3 a bottle, if it's kinda an open wound or a hole, then again flush it with peroxide, make sure you get all the peroxide out though, use a syringe they're like 50cents kep flushing with the peroxide for about 4 days, once a day would do, depends how bad it is *Kim* |

Yeah, but all vets aren't all clueless about gps. Find one that you know is knowledgable about them.. then bring your gp to the vet that u know and trust!

You've obviously had a bad experience with some vets but you have to remember that not all vets are bad. Yes you get vets that have no clue about guinea pigs because they have not been taught. But Exotic/small animal vets do and they have been trained specially to deal with animals such as pigs.

Sundew Cavies- You are telling me that you have never taken a cavy to the vet? Are you saying vets aren't knowledgable?
My vet is excellent with cavies, and would never give them toxic anitbiotics. I take it you had a bad experience? Did you not research your vet and ask questions before letting them treat your cavy? Yes, peroxide may work, but I would rather get Baytril from my vet then risk an infection trying to treat it myself. Yes, I would rather spend $40 for something that I know will work, then $0.33 for a bottle of peroxide.
