hey guys, I've been reading quite few horse books(broadening my horizons..lol) and I cant find answers to few of my questions.. here they are:
What shampoo to use on a horse? shampoo especially made for the horse or u can use human one? and is it shampoo&cond. together on the whole body? or just shampoo on body and conditioner on mane &tail? At the equine center where I work, they use ussual human shampoo(suave or something) and also I was at Wal-mart once and I walked in dog section, they have this shampoo I think its called "mane&tail"~yellow bottle with horses on it.... is that for horses or dogs? another question: Can u ride a horse without a bit? just using halter or a bridle with bit removed, I think it still restricts horses head, without that nasty thing in their mouth. I've seen this girl ride using bitless bridle, seemed fine to me, plus the horse she was riding, was one of the new horses that they just bought... Do u have to be advanced in riding to use bitless bridle? and do u have to know the horse well enough and have good relationship with it? Thanks a lot!!

At my old barn we used Joy to bathe the horses. For the manes and tails we used lots of conditioner and baby oil for horse shows. It really depends on what kind of skin your horse has, I know some are allergic to certain soaps and things and you have to be careful.
As for bitless bridles, it is usually for advanced riders. Bits dont restrict the head, beginners usually use a snaffle bit (rubber or sweetiron). It doesnt hurt the horse, you just need to remember as a beginner to work on your legs and to not balance with your hands. What you might enjoy is the Pat Parelli teaching which trains both horse and rider to be in harmony and advances you to riding/jumping without any equipment at all on your horse. You should look at ordering some of the videos or talk to your trainer to see what she might have available. Alot of hunter/jumper barns use his techniques to improve seat, trust between horse and rider, and confidence for timid older riders. It also works out well with horses that have problems trusting people. My trainer took us to the two-day seminar and I nearly started crying watching what those people were able to do without any equipment on the horse and using a 'carrot stick' to do signals. They played games with their horses that also helped in training. Three-day eventers David and Karen O' Connor have adopted his program to use in training their event horses. They became hooked on the program when Pat told them he could have his students jump the same cross-country course without saddle or bridle. Go to www.parelli.com to see more. There are lots of testimonials on the website from people of all training levels, ages and disciplines. |

Definately. Go to the dollar store and see what scents you can get, the conditioner really helps tails out if they're tangled. Sometimes it can save time instead of having to come it out hair by hair.

OK! First off, a bit is not gross or nasty, although you have to clean it and that can get pretty sloppy.
A bitless bridle is called a amore it puts pressure on the horses nose instead of the mouth. I have seen extreme abuse with this type of bridle. One horse I knew had a aweful time because her nose was basically broken. I am not sure if you are inquiring about a amore or about just being able to ride with something like a halter and 2 leadlines. If you are talking bout a halter and leadlines then a few tips or words of advice are... make sure your horse listens to LEG you will not have any sugsess what so ever if you are yanking on his head. I hope that helped. CJ

I rode my first horse with a amore!!! There is no reason why you shouldn't ride without a bit(even though bits are very useful on a naughty pony)
