Pig with mange
Hey everyone!
We just got a 4 month old pot belly pig yesterday from someone who couldn't take care of it anymore. We dont really know what or how much to feed him. There is a feed store nearby that seels pig feed. Would that be ok, and if so, how much does he get? The store doesn't open until monday so we have been feeding him a few handfuls of diet dog food, rabbit pellets, crackers, apples, grapes, and bread. Will this be ok for the next day or two. We also descovered that it has REALLY bad mange. The vet around here said to give him revolution (for dogs and cats) so thats what we did. Has anyone else had experience with this, and if so, what did you do? He is really really ichy! Tha for everything. Also if anyone has any more info they could spare if would be much appreciated.

pig help...
Congratulations on your little guy!
PLEASE try to find him either Champion potbellied pig food by Ross Mill (available online) OR Mazuri (they have a young potbellied pig "grower") It's important that your little guy is eating potbellied pig food. PLEASE discontinue the dog food, it's too fattening and has too much salt. He can have 3/4 of a cup, 3 times per day of the food, until he is six months old. The bunny pellets will be ok until Monday. If you are not able to get potbellied pig food, you may try Hog Maintenance food (NO MEDICATED). You will want to soak the food in hot water until the food has absorbed all of the water (it should not be soupy, but more like the consistency of cooked oatmeal.) When he has reached 6 months old, and for the rest of his life, he can get 1 cup of food (watered down), twice per day. PLEASE go easy on the treats. Piggies don't really need them, so please go sparingly....a few cheerios or a few small apple or pear slices, or a 1/2 a banana, etc. a few times a week are FINE! You will want to distribute treats as rewards. Pigs that become spoiled from receiving too many treats will literally knock you over in expectation of treats. Teach him how to sit...how to sit up....and any other tricks you can think of. Pigs are very smart and training them is a good way to make them a good citizen and companion. You will want to get this guy neutered by a potbellied pig savvy vet (NOT a farm vet...) PLEASE try and get the Revolution off the pig, if you can wash it off. It will BURN his skin! Your vet can use injectible Ivomec at one shot, then follow up 10 days later. (the injectible can be given orally, mixed in food or injected. ) Greg |

The revolution seems to be working though, and that is what the vet suggested. His skin isn't irritated at all and doesn't hurt when we pet it. The mange also seems to be getting better. BTW, we can't wash it off, its already absorbed.

hi again..
I'm glad it didn't hurt piggy, but PLEASE, going forward, don't use a topical treatment...Revolution, etc. have NOT been approved for use in pigs.
Your pig will need to be wormed, so your vet should be able to prescribe the wormer, which will help with the mange. best of luck with your little one and enjoy! Greg |
