Blind Rat

hi today I adopted A rat from a Rat Shelter Community I found a beautiful hooded rat with a line down his back and a spot on his back but then when they said he was blind I said thats ok.Hes very tame and lets me pet him but whn I pick him up hes squirmy and im scared he might fall because he was about to jump right out of my hands. I'm not going to get rid of him though because I love him but im wonder if theres anyway to make him alot more tame so he wont jump out of my hands.

congrats on adopting a rescue rat.
as to making him tamer, it will take some time for him to completely adapt. i have had some girls that become very personable and used to me within days. i have had others that take weeks.

i think you should spent lots of small amounts of time with him. instead of playing with him for 30 minutes once a day, you should touch/hold him 5 minutes, 5-6 times a day. get him used to your smell.

you should also search on google.com for sites re: blind rats. maybe someone out there has had the same experience.

also, you will have to get him a friend so they can groom each other and sleep together. however, i don't know how you would introduce a blind rat to a "normal" one.

good luck.

Hey, that is great to have adopted a bllind rat. From my own experience I know that they are getting quite well around as soon as they are acostumed with their new enviroment.

Another idea would be to get it a companion which will help him out!

Keep up your good work

At the place I adopted him they keep females and males in seperate cages and thaTS IT but the rat that I got was alone because all the other rats were picking on him so I think its better if I just stick with him

Rats are very social animals and will accept a companion pretty easy. In all my years having rats it was just on one occassion that I had trouble to intrudice a third female. - But if you give him lots of attention I guess you both will be fine!

Good luck
