Kitten sneezing, wheezing
Hi all, my cat Cajun is about four months old. She's always been sneezy. But recently, she's been making an odd wheezing/coughing sound. I just pick her up, and pat her side a little, and she stops. Other than that, she is perfectly healthy. Very friendly, and very active. And I do mean very active. Maybe too active, ha ha. But she's a kitten, so that's normal. She'll be going in soon for shots, but I was wondering if this is something that should be seen immediately. Can cats get colds or allergies?

Cats can get colds and have allergies. But anytime I hear of cats sneezing and weezing I worry about an infection in the lungs. It gets worse very quickly, if that's the case your kitten will start to show increasing amounts of mucus in the corner of his/her eyes and nose. You will need to see a vet for med's and if you have any other cats it is highly spreadable. Keep them seperate and wash your hands after dealing with the kitten ( even if it's just a cold, it's a lot less expensive to deal with one sick cat than more than one ). The antibiotics aren't that much at all, esp. for a kitten: it is dosed by weight.
Give your kitten a big hug and a get well soon for me, ok?

Thanks so much! I'm hoping it's just allergies...can a cat transmit a cold to a dog or rabbit? Or me? Ha ha. I'll keep an eye on her. So far, there's been no eye/nose discharge, so I'll take that as a good sign. Oh, and Rage Cage (that would be Cajun) said "Thanks for the get well" in her own little kitty way, puurrrrr. We both appreciate it!

I am not too sure how they pass between other animals, the chances of it passing between you and your kitten aren't that likely. ( not to say it can't happen ) but if your careful about washing your hands before you eat and I would suggested some antibacteral hand soap if you don't already have one. And just to be on the safe side you might want to find a room to keep your kitten seperated from the other. If it is a infection of her air ways it's very much like cannel cough which dogs can get.

Hi Piano
Well at first to me it sounds like your little kitty may just have a cold. But...yes, cats can have allergies. In my case it was different... My Snuggles began coughing in December, it went on for a few months nothing major, just a cough every now and again. He had no discharge from the nose or eyes though. My vet said not to worry, sounded like a hairball. Then in at the beginning of March, he started all the sudden coughing alot more and he was wheezing like, fluid sounding, so I ran him to the vet. She did a test to make sure he didn't have heartworms, as he is an always indoor cat and isn't on preventative. She said this much coughing was rare in a cat, especially if it wasn't a cold, and the first sign on heartworms in cat's is coughing. He had a blood test done, he was fine. So, the next step was X-rays. It turns out he has asthma! I didn't know cat's could get it. She had to give him a cortizone injection. It is supossed to last 3-4 months. He has recently started coughing somtimes again, but nothing major. I need to bring him in if it gets bad, and either get a prednizone pill or another injection. When I would describe it to her at first, she would say"its sounds like a hairball" and I said "No, its more like wheezing, like there is fluid in there" When is your kitties appt for shots? I would get her there soon, if it were me, to have her checked out. It most likely could be a simple cold, or URI, and the vet would probably give you meds so kitty would feel better faster. And Lion is right, make sure you wash your hands before you eat etc. Also, I don't know if a cold could be passed to a rabbit or dog or you, but I would wash my hands after handling kitty. When I adopted Ginger she had a little cold, and a week later Snuggles had an eye infection, my vet said he probably got that from Ginger. So, a cold could be passed to any other cats. Let us know how it goes at the vet when you take her and I hope she feels better soon!
