Vitamins and water supply

Make sure you always give your gerbil lots of water and his daily dose of vitamins. It’s important to note that even though some fruits and veggies have a high water content, they will not provide all the water your gerbil needs.

Placing a dish of water in your gerbil’s cage is not practical, as it will be full of shavings and food in no time. Therefore, you will need to purchase a water bottle that can be attached to the side of your pet’s cage.

Vitamins typically come in liquid or powder forms. Liquid vitamins may be added directly to your gerbil’s water bottle. Powdered vitamins can be added to either food or water, but make sure you follow the directions for each method.

Vets suggest adding iodine, in small amounts, to water as this can help increase your pet’s resistance to diseases, improve fertility, improve the health of embryos if you are breeding, and it also keeps fungus from growing inside the water bottle.

Be aware that iodine will decrease the potency of vitamins, so you will need to either rotate vitamin and iodine water or use powdered vitamins mixed into your gerbil’s food.
